An electric heated towel rail runs from a mains-wired or plug-in electric element and operates independently of your central heating system. A dual-fuel rail includes both a central heating connection and an electric element, so you can heat it during summer or when the boiler is off without running the whole heating system.
A purely electric towel rail does not need a plumber, but it does require a qualified electrician to connect it safely to a fused spur. Dual-fuel models require both an electrician for the element and a plumber or heating engineer to connect the rail to the central heating circuit in accordance with current regulations.
Smaller heated towel rails are primarily designed to warm towels and provide background warmth rather than act as the sole heat source in a bathroom. For a bathroom needing primary heating, pair the towel rail with a dedicated bathroom panel heater. As a guide, allow 80W per square metre when sizing supplementary heating.

Electric heated towel rails with a built-in thermostat or programmer are designed for safe, unattended operation and will cycle on and off to maintain a set temperature. Models with no timer should not be left on indefinitely without supervision. Fitting a seven-day digital programmer or upgrading to a WiFi model gives greater control and peace of mind.
