Common Questions

Everything you need to know

Can a plug-in heater be used as a main heat source?+

A plug-in electric heater can serve as the main heat source in a small room, provided the output is correctly sized for the space. Allow 80W per square metre when selecting the wattage. For larger rooms or as a whole-home solution, hardwired panel heaters are more practical, as they are permanently positioned and controlled by a built-in thermostat and timer.

Are plug-in electric heaters safe to leave on overnight?+

Plug-in panel heaters with a built-in thermostat are designed to cycle on and off to maintain a set temperature and are generally safe for extended use. Keep the heater at least 500mm away from curtains, furniture, and bedding. Do not use an extension lead or multi-socket adaptor, and avoid plugging the heater into a socket shared with other high-draw appliances.

How much does it cost to run a plug-in electric heater?+

Running cost depends on the heater’s wattage and the current electricity tariff. A 1,000W (1kW) heater running continuously for one hour consumes 1kWh of electricity. At a typical UK electricity rate of around 24p per kWh, that equates to approximately 24p per hour at full output. A thermostat will cycle the heater off once the room temperature is reached, reducing actual consumption.

Do I need to do anything to install a plug-in heater?+

No permanent installation is required. Plug the heater into a standard 13A socket, position it on the floor or mount it on the supplied wall bracket if one is included, and switch it on. Ensure the cable is not a trip hazard and that the heater is positioned away from soft furnishings. Some models include a cable management channel for a tidier wall-mounted installation.

What is the difference between a plug-in panel heater and a plug-in fan heater?+

A plug-in panel heater uses a heated element with natural convection to warm the room gradually and quietly. A plug-in fan heater uses a built-in fan to circulate warm air quickly, making it better for rapid warm-up in short periods. Panel heaters are generally quieter and more suitable for bedrooms and offices, while fan heaters suit occasional use in draughty spaces.
