Do electric heated towel rails need to be filled with heating fluid?

Most electric heated towel rails use a sealed internal circuit filled with a blend of water and anti-corrosion glycol solution, which transfers heat from the electric element through the rail. Pre-filled models are common and arrive ready to install - the fluid level is set at the factory and does not require topping up during normal use. Dual-fuel models may require filling if switching between electric and central heating operation.

What is a dual-fuel heated towel rail?

A dual-fuel towel rail can be operated on either an electric immersion element or connected into a central heating wet system, allowing year-round use regardless of whether the boiler is running. In summer, the electric element runs the rail independently. In winter, it can operate from the central heating circuit. The electric element typically connects to a nearby fused spur connection unit and can be fitted by a competent DIYer or electrician.

Can I control a WiFi heated towel rail with an app?

Yes. WiFi towel rail models from Adax Solaire are compatible with the Adax Home app on iOS and Android, allowing you to set heating schedules, adjust temperature, and control the rail remotely. The rail connects to your home's 2.4GHz WiFi network without requiring a separate hub. Scheduling allows the rail to warm up before a shower or before bedtime, so towels are ready when you need them.

What IP rating do I need for a bathroom towel rail?

UK wiring regulations (BS 7671) require appliances in bathroom Zone 2 - within 0.6 metres of the edge of a bath or shower tray - to have a minimum IP44 rating. Most electric heated towel rails in the Adax Solaire range carry IP44 certification and are therefore suitable for standard bathroom installation. For positions closer to water, a higher rating such as IP55 is required; check product specifications before purchasing.

How long does it take for an electric heated towel rail to warm towels?

A pre-filled electric towel rail typically reaches operating temperature within 20 to 40 minutes, depending on output wattage and ambient room temperature. Lower-output models (60-100W) will take longer than higher-wattage variants. Using the scheduling function in the Adax Home app, you can programme the rail to begin heating 30 to 45 minutes before it is needed, ensuring towels are warm without leaving the heater running unnecessarily.
